Guaranda

The Canton Guaranda is the capital of the province of Bolivar.
Population: about 20,500 inhabitants.
It is located in the middle of the territory of Ecuador, outside of the Westerne Sierra, 220 km from Quito (5 hours by bus) and 150 km from Guayaquil, it has paved road access.
Weather: between 22 and 25 ºC (72 and 77 ºF) , it also offers cold moors.
This beautiful city was presumably founded in 1571, it was probably named after Guaranda the primitive tribe that inhabited the Guarangas which is related to the Guarango, a leafy tree very abundant in the area and that is now planted in the park of the city as a symbolic remembrance.
The festivities are held on May 15 and April 23 being these possible dates of the foundation of the province.
The Independence day took place on: November 10th  1820.
Guaranda is also called "The city of the 7 hills" because it is surrounded by elevations (Loma de la Cruz, of Guaranda Loma, San Jacinto, San Bartolo, Talalat, and Tililag Calvary). At the top of Cruz Loma stands the statue of the Indian Chief Guaranga.  This hill is also a viewpoint, below  you´ll find a historical museum with some archeological pieces, ceramics, historical documents, weapons used during the Independence day, etc. It is the smallest of the Ecuadorian capitals.
In the town square stands the monument dedicated to Simon Bolívar, "the Liberator", which was a gift to the city by the government of Venezuela.

Typical food and drinks:
The Blue Bird (el pájaro azul) is the name of the Guaranda typical drink, (not grilled in oil ) tortillas in at dry tiesto (copper saucepan), and the guinea pig, baked in the wood oven and fresh clubfoot, which can be found in restaurants.

The little houses with roofs made of tile, the narrow old streets, and the warmth of its people are the best hosts to tourists who will surly enjoy the incredible view, the peace the city offers and the brotherhood of its inhabitants.
